HARARE, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A group of Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe on Wednesday handed over to the capital of Harare a refurbished swimming pool which is expected to enhance grassroots sports development and keep youths away from drugs and substance abuse.

The refurbishment was funded by the Chamber of Chinese Enterprises in Zimbabwe (CCEZ), a registered business organization comprising 80 Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe that also supports various charity projects throughout the country.

The swimming pool, in Harare's high-density suburb of Mbare, had been closed for over three years. CCEZ Vice Chairperson Liu Baixue said the importance of this recreational facility should never be underestimated as it serves a dual purpose of providing recreational needs and keeping youths off the streets.

"Our unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people living in the communities where we operate has led to our active participation in social welfare in Zimbabwe and support for various charity projects throughout the country," she said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume thanked the CCEZ for refurbishing the swimming pool, saying such corporate social responsibility was exemplary.

He said the support of CCEZ complimented their efforts to revitalize one of the city's oldest suburbs and build a modern and smart city of Harare.

"I want to thank the chamber for contributing to this swimming pool. They have simply donated as part of their social responsibility, and I do believe that we should applaud such endeavors," Mafume said.

He also said there was a need for the Council of Harare to build more community swimming pools in the city in line with the growing population, as the current 13 pools have become grossly inadequate.
