CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- By the end of 2022, there were 32,133,400 permanent residents in Chongqing (including 22,803,200 urban residents) with an urbanization rate of 70.96%, according to the information on permanent resident population and urbanization rate of Chongqing’s different districts and counties in 2022 released by Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics on March 7.

The data show that the number of the permanent resident population in metropolitan areas was 21,227,200 by the end of 2022, with an urbanization rate of 79.8%. There are 10,477,600 in the downtown area with an urbanization rate of 93.3%. Yuzhong, Dadukou, Jiangbei, Shapingba, Jiulongpo, Nan’an, and Yubei in the downtown area witness a dramatic increase in urbanization level, with urbanization rates exceeding 90%. The permanent resident population was 10,749,600 and the urbanization rate stood at 66.65% in the new areas of downtown Chongqing. Fuling, Wansheng, Changshou, Yongchuan, and Bishan all saw urbanization rates of more than 70%.

It’s worth noting that Yuzhong District experienced the highest urbanization rate in Chongqing, which reached 100%.

Additionally, the Three Gorges Reservoir area in northeast Chongqing has a permanent population of 8,041,400 residents and an urbanization rate of 54.51%. The Wuling Mountain area in Southeast Chongqing has a permanent population of 2,864,800 residents and an urbanization rate of 51.68%.

When the urbanization rate reaches 70% and above, urbanization development will move from a stage of rapid growth to a period of steady progress, the gap between urban and rural areas will be gradually filled, the growth rate of the urban population will slow down, and we will see deeper regional integration.
