The successful trial production of the world’s largest magnesium alloy automotive castings in Chongqing

2023-06-29 15:02:18

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Under the guidance of Pan Fusheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Chongqing University, the National Magnesium Alloy Engineering Technology Research Center of Chongqing University, the National Key Laboratory of High-end Equipment Casting Technology, Chongqing Millison Technology, and Chongqing BOAO Magnesium Aluminium Manufacturing have jointly trial-produced the world’s largest magnesium alloy automotive castings recently, according to Chongqing University.
The trial production involves two types of ultra-large new-energy vehicle structural components: the integrated body casting and the battery case cover. With a projection area of over 2.2 square meters, the two components are the largest magnesium alloy automotive castings in the world. However, the weight of the two castings is reduced by 32% compared with the original aluminum alloy castings, showing bright prospects for lightweight materials.
It is learned during the trial production process, the team overcame several technical difficulties and achieved vital technological breakthroughs in the design of high-fluidity and high-performance magnesium alloy castings, the purification of bulk magnesium alloy, and the prediction and control of casting defects, to ensure the successful trial production of high-quality ultra-large magnesium alloy structural components. Their success laid a foundation for the large-scale production and application of ultra-large magnesium alloy structural components.
An industry insider said, the successful trial production of the magnesium alloy automotive castings will promote the large-scale application of magnesium alloy in the field of large and complex structural components, and it is strategically significant to the development of lightweight autos.
