Chongqing takes measures to guarantee power supply during the peaks in energy demand

2023-07-07 13:28:18

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- As the electricity consumption for households and enterprises dramatically rises in summer, some people may worry about the power supply. According to the Chongqing Municipal Economic and Information Commission and State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company, Chongqing has taken measures to guarantee power supply in summer.

46 key power supply projects are started

The 220-kV Renhe electricity substation in Yubei and the two large-capacity transformers are operating to deliver sufficient electricity to Chongqing Jiangbei Internation Airport and Chongqing North Station on July 5.

According to the project management center of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company, the company has invested special funds to replace the original 180 MVA main transformer in Renhe substation with a 240 MVA transformer to guarantee sufficient power supply during the peaks in energy demand this summer. "With the capacity enhancement project, the power supply capacity of the substation has improved by 30%.”

“Chongqing has implemented 46 key power supply projects in advance to guarantee sufficient power supply this summer. All these projects have been completed and put into operation,” said the head of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company. These projects will effectively alleviate the pressure on the power supply and guarantee sufficient power supply for high-quality economic and social development in Chongqing.

The coal-fired power generation increased significantly year-on-year in Chongqing

Coal-fired power generation has been the main way of power supply all along in Chongqing.

Despite the impact of multiple factors such as continuous growth in power demand, shortage of power resources in the first half of the year, and the low hydropower level, coal-fired power generation has been the main way of power supply all along in Chongqing and played an essential role in ensuring the power supply in the city.

Overall, the coal-fired power generation in the first half of the year has three major highlights: firstly, the generation of coal-fired power increased significantly year-on-year; the main power plants in Chongqing generated 31.34 billion kWh of electricity between January and June, up 34.5% from last year, according to the Chongqing Municipal Economic and Information Commission.

Secondly, coal-fired power generation contributed to more than 70% of the growth of electricity generation in Chongqing. From January to June this year, the electricity purchased in Chongqing amounted to 55.94 billion KWH, up 4.5% from last year, among which coal-fired power generation contributed the most.

Thirdly, coal-fired power generation continued to play an essential role in guaranteeing power supply. By the end of June, the main coal-fired power plants in Chongqing stocked up to 4.424 million tons of coal, which showed an increase of 475,000 tons over the same period last year.

Chongqing purchased coal from Shaanxi in advance

A sufficient coal supply is a prerequisite for coal-fired power generation. In recent years, Shaanxi has been the main supplier of coal for Chongqing.

Between January and May, 8.926 million tons of coal has been delivered from Shaanxi to Chongqing, accounting for 113.6% of the total plan. The coal delivery rate reached 103.7%. The goals of coal transportation and power supply are over fulfilled.

“In recent years, new highlights have emerged in the strategic energy cooperation between Shaanxi and Chongqing.” For example, SHCCIG has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company to jointly built the Phase II of the Hechuan Power Plant; Chongqing increased the amount of electricity purchased from Shaanxi from 540 million kilowatt hours last year to some 2.1 billion kilowatt hours this year.

It is expected the daily transport amount of coal from Shaanxi will average 52,000 tons, 17 freight trains will be loaded daily, and the total volume of coal will reach 19 million tons this year. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
