CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The tennis competition of Chengdu Universiade will be held from July 29 to August 6. More than 170 players will compete for seven gold medals in more than 300 tennis matches.

"Now we are actively conducting pre-tournament adaptation training in Chengdu, as well as technical and tactical cooperation training." Guo Liya, deputy leader of the Chinese college tennis team and secretary-general of the tennis branch of the Federation of University Sports of China, introduced that the tennis team had arrived in Chengdu as early as June 23 to start closed training, and the hot weather was a challenge for the athletes.

Guo Liya told us that the tennis team has eight athletes, including Southwest University students Guo Hanyu, Tang Qianhui, Gu Jin (students), and a teacher Wang Xia will also participate as the coach. “The average age of the selected tennis players from Southwest University is 23 years old, but they have rich experience in competition. Some of them have won championships in international competitions and professional competitions."

Guo Hanyu is currently a second-year graduate student at the College of Sports of Southwest University. Back in the 2019 Naples Universiade, she and her partner Ye Qiuyu won the women's doubles tennis match, becoming the first Chinese team in the past 18 years to win a gold medal in women's doubles tennis in the Universiade after Li Na and Li Ting won at the 2001 Beijing Universiade. Guo Hanyu also won the women's team gold medal in 2019.

This time, Guo Hanyu will participate in the women’s doubles tennis match paired with Jiang Xinyu. Instead of stressing over winning the golden medal, Guo said that she would try her best to win every point on the court and leave no regrets.

The 23-year-old Tang Qianhui, who is currently in her first year of postgraduate study at the School of Sports of Southwest University, will participate in the mixed doubles at Chengdu Universiade. She hopes to have an excellent performance and contribute to the Chinese delegation.

Most of the participants of Chengdu Universiade are excellent athletes, and some of them have even played in Wimbledon Championships. The competition will be pretty fierce. I hope that all athletes in the game will pull out their best performances and have a good state of mind.

“We want to make a breakthrough and achieve good results in women's doubles and mixed doubles,” said Guo Liya. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
