CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Zhang Wen’ao, a Chongqing athlete who is studying at Southwest University, won the gold in men’s 3-meter springboard diving in the Chengdu World University Games on August 2. This is the fourth gold medal won by Chongqing’s athletes.

Zhang Wen’ao completed a stunning 5154B dive in his first dive, ranking first with a score of 86.70 and drawing cheers from the audience.

In his second dive, Zhang Wen’ao did a 407C dive. He walked to the front of the springboard, stood on his tiptoes, and jumped. After triple somersaults in the air, he jumped into the water without making a splash.

Two of the seven judges gave him 9 points, and Zhang Wen’ao was 24 points behind the first runner-up.

Zhang extended his lead with a 307C Dive in his third, which won him a high score of 9.5 and made him in first place with a total score of 266.15.

The difficulty degree of the last dive rose significantly. He achieved a rip entry in his fourth dive, winning a total score of 102.60 and cheers from the audience. It is the only dive that has won 10 points in the competition.

Ultimately, Zhang Wen’ao claimed gold with a total score of 533.45. After the 3-meter springboard diving event, he will participate in the 1-meter springboard diving event.

After the game, Zhang Wen’ao told us that he would like to thank his parents, the staff members, and the coaches for their efforts. “This is my first world gold medal. We will continue to receive training and work harder.”

Zhang Wen'ao is a native of Chongqing born in 2002. He has been practicing diving since childhood. He idolized the athlete Shi Tingmao. Zhang won the gold medal in men's synchronized 10m platform with a total score of 385.14 in the 2019 FINA World Diving Grand Prix (Germany). In 2021, he participated in the 14th National Games on behalf of the Chongqing team and won 5th place in men's 3-meter springboard diving.

Huang Xiaoling, the dean of the School of Sports at Southwest University, was very excited. To watch the performance of Zhang Wen’ao, he drove an hour from the Taekwondo arena in Chengdu to the swimming pool of Jianyang Sports Center. He saw the last two dives of Zhang Wen’ao.
