CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The 61-year-old Zhou (not his real name) died from a car accident, and his wife and son decided to donate his organs as an act of love at a time of grief. On August 24, the organ donation operation was successfully carried out at the First Affiliated Hospital of the Army Military Medical University.

The reporter learned from the Red Cross Society of China Chongqing Branch that that was the 100th human organ donation case in Chongqing in 2023. At this point, Chongqing has seen 312 large organs donated in 2023, giving 299 patients with organ failure a new life.

Chongqing has been approved by the Red Cross Society of China and the Ministry of Health to carry out human organ donation since 2012, and the human organ donation has gradually entered the field of vision of more people. Guo Guo, Philip, Chen Junli, Diao Panya... such names are familiar to people, and their deeds have influenced more and more people to care about human organ donation and become human organ donation volunteers.

As of August this year, more than 150,000 persons have registered as organ donors in our city, and a total of 1,042 donation cases have been recorded, giving nearly 3,000 patients with organ failure a new life.

A string of numbers unite the relay of love. On July 6, 2016, Chongqing had more than 100 human organ donation cases, and it took 4 years from 1 to 100 cases. In 2017, the number of donations exceeded 100 for the first time; on May 9, 2018, the first foreign-related donation was successfully implemented; in 2019, the total number of donations exceeded 500; and in 2023, the total number of donations exceeded 1,000...... Every 1 case, every 10 cases, and every 100 cases are not only the accumulation of numbers, but also the inheritance and continuation of life.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Red Cross Society of China Chongqing Branch, although the number of human organ donations across the country has shown an increasing trend year by year, the proportion of supply and demand for organ donations is still out-of-balance severely.

In the past three years, six transplant centers in our city have increased more than 1,200 liver transplant recipients and more than 3,000 kidney transplant recipients, the ratio of organ supply and demand is about 3:1 and 8:1 respectively, and more than 50% of patients died during the waiting process, which does not include the huge population of end-stage organ failure patients who failed to register for transplantation for various reasons.

Next, the Red Cross Society of China Chongqing Branch will further do a good job in human organ donation publicity, mobilization, registration, remembrance, humanitarian care and others, continue improving the professional, standardized and scientific level of work, and promote the high-quality development of human organ donation in our city.
