CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The supermoon of 2023, the biggest and brightest full moon, appeared on August 30. 23: 54 was the best time to view the supermoon, as it was when the moon reached perigee and appeared larger and brighter than normal.

This supermoon is a rare “Super Blue Moon”. Super Blue Moon has nothing to do with the moon’s color, which refers to the second full moon in a month. On average, it occurs once every 2.4 years.
 

Why does the moon vary in size? The moon revolves around the Earth in an elliptical orbit and thus its center-to-center distance from the Earth varies with mean values of around 350,000 km at perigee to around 400,000 at apogee. The supermoon refers to a full moon at perigee. According to astronomical observation, the apparent diameter and the size of the full moon at perigee are 14% and 30% larger than those of the full moon at apogee.

Saturn will be located directly opposite of the Sun – at opposition – between August 26 and 27 this year. Therefore, these two days will be the best time to view Saturn and the full moon.
