CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The well-known dinosaurs in the Chongqing Museum of Natural History, such as the fierce Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis, the Chungkingosaurus jiangbeiensis unearthed in Dashiba, and the Lufengosaurus huenei known as ‘the first dinosaur in China’, will be ‘alive’ before our eyes!
With the help of AR technology, the Chongqing Museum of Natural History will take the lead in bringing precious fossils back to life in southwest China, Gao Bichun, the director of the museum told us. The first batch of over 60 pieces of reconstructed precious fossils will be unveiled before the Spring Festival.
In addition to the large and small dinosaur skeleton fossils in the Dinosaur Hall, the specimens of animals living in the savannah of Africa displayed in Bellin Hall will offer an AR tour presenting stunning images of the great migration of African savanna animals.
The famous dinosaurs in Chongqing are included ‘reconstruction’ list
“Considering that young people are the main audience of the Chongqing Museum of Natural History, we decided to employ AR technology to bring the fossils to life, instead of presenting descriptive text that is dull and boring for young people,” said Gao Bichun.
According to the ‘Statistics of Visitors to the Museum during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day’, Dinosaur Hall and Bellin Hall were the top two popular halls during the holiday.
The informative statistics have offered great support for the reconstruction work. Most of the first 60 fossils are the exhibits in Dinosaur Hall and Bellin Hall. “We’ve already chosen at least 20 'dinosaur stars'.”
What story will the fossils tell with the help of technology? Each 'dinosaur star' has its own story, said Gao Bichuan. Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis, the most complete specimen representing giant sauropod dinosaur fossils, will tell us how fossils are dug up. “We will recreate the signs of how 40 tons of fossils are dug up and show this 24-meter long ‘alive’ dinosaur.”
The Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis, the first nearly complete fossil of a carnivorous dinosaur discovered in China, will tell the story of the food chain of carnivorous dinosaurs. Yangchuanosaurus magnus, unearthed in the same area as Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis, will tell us how it lived as a ‘king’ in the Jurassic period. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
