CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- 2023 marks the first year of the implementation of the newly revised Wildlife Protection Law, and November is Chongqing Wildlife Protection Awareness Month. The opening ceremony for the 2023 Chongqing Wildlife Protection Awareness Month has been recently held in Locajoy Wildlife World.

As a unique city of mountains and rivers, Chongqing boasts a great variety of living species, which include more than 800 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates, of which 112 are under national key protection such as the Trachypithecus francoisi, Moschus berezovskii, Mergus squamatus (Chinese Merganser), Elaphodus cephalophus, and Capricornis milneedwardsii.

In recent years, Chongqing has vigorously promoted the construction of ecological civilization, speeded up the establishment of a scientific and reasonable management system for nature reserves, and implemented such ecological restoration projects as Saving and Protecting Rare Species, Mountains and Forest Belts, and Forest Quality Improvement. Thanks to its great efforts, more than 90% of rare and endangered wild animals are effectively protected.

In the Dalou mountain area, the population of Trachypithecus francoisi increased to 20 groups and 160 individuals, the number of distribution areas of Moschus berezovskii increased to 19, and the winter population of Chinese Merganser has been found in the Qihe River area for ten years. The rare and endangered species showed a good development trend. The 172 integrated and optimized nature reserves have further expanded and optimized wildlife habitats, with the quality of habitat increasingly improved.
