To know more: Chongqing people’s memories of cable cars
Cable cars have left an indelible impression on the older generation of Chongqing people. They used to be the name card of Chongqing, making transportation in the Mountain City much easier, and witnessing the rapid development of Chongqing. As the transportation systems improved, cable cars have faded from the stage of history.
■ Wanglongmen cable car
The Wanglongmen cable car, the first passenger cable car in Chongqing, started operating on May 16, 1945. It was out of service due to the construction of roads along the Yangtze River in 1993. At the end of 2009, it was designated as a historical and cultural site under government protection.
■ Lianglukou Cable Car
Built in 1953, the Lianglukou cable car is the first cable car line built after the liberation of Chongqing. After it was completed, the daily passenger volume of the cable car exceeded 9000, and after its renovation in the 1980s, it dealt with 58,000 passengers a day, making it one of the important means of transportation in downtown Chongqing at that time. With the development of the Huangguan Grand Escalator in 1996, the Lianglukou Cable Car has now vanished.
■ Linjiangmen Cable Car
Opened in February 1963, the carriage of the Linjiangmen Cable Car resembled a huge van. Because it ran on a slope, the whole carriage is on a slant, divided into several levels in the shape of a ladder. As there were no doors or windows, passengers could poke their heads out to appreciate the scenery outside.
■ Chaotianmen Cable Car
The operation of the Chaotianmen cable car started in 1984. Since most citizens were tired of climbing the steep slope of Chaotianmen Wharf with a drop of around 50 meters, they preferred to arrive at Chaotianmen by boat and then take the cable car to go up the slope. It’s greatly energy-saving, and the ticket price was quite affordable. As the city developed, fewer people took the cable car, and the Chaotianmen cable car has been out of service since 2007.
