Significant achievements made in the excavation of Tomb No.1 of the Western Han Dynasty in Chongqing’s Guankou

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Recently, significant achievements have been made in the excavation of Tomb No.1 of the Western Han Dynasty in Chongqing’s Guanko, according to the Chongqing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

The Tomb No.1 of the Western Han Dynasty in Guankou, located between the first and second platforms on the right bank of the Wujiang River in Caijia Village, Jiangkou Town, Wulong District, is part of the Site of Tianzi Grave, said the Chongqing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.
The Site of Tianzi Grave is one of the cultural relics affected by the flood in the construction of the Baima Navigation Power Hub Project in Chongqing, and it is a key archaeological excavation site of the project.
The Site of Tianzi Grave is rich in cultural deposits, where the stone watchtowers and talisman fragments of the Han and Six Dynasties have been unearthed over the years. The tomb containing the personal items of Zhangsun Wuji was also discovered within the Site of Tianzi Grave. Approved by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Chongqing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology has carried out archaeological exploration and excavation in the Site of Tianzi Grave since March 2023. In addition to the building sites of the Song Dynasty and the stone watchtowers of the Han Dynasty, several tombs from the Han to the Six Dynasties were also discovered. Tomb No.1 of the Western Han Dynasty in Guankou is a significant achievement made in this excavation, with a large number of lacquer ware, wooden ware, bamboo ware, pottery, bronze ware, and other precious cultural relics unearthed.
