Hotel bookings for the 2024 New Year’s Day holiday grow more than five times year-on-year

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- It is less than half a month before the New Year holiday. An increasing number of consumers plan to travel to a different city to celebrate the new year. According to the 2024 New Year's Day Travel Insight released by Ctrip, as of December 15, the overall domestic travel orders for the 2024 New Year's Day holiday have increased by more than three times compared to last year, with hotel bookings growing by more than five times compared to the same period last year, air ticket booking showing a 205% increase, and customized group tours increasing by 240%. The search volume of domestic air tickets on the Ctrip platform increased by 26% compared to the same period in 2019, and the search volume of domestic hotels increased by 170% compared to 2019.

The travel booking data of the 15 days before the New Year holiday shows that Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Harbin, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Wuhan, and Chongqing are popular domestic destinations for the 2024 New Year’s Day holiday.

Train tickets for the first day of the New Year's Day holiday will go on sale tomorrow. According to Ctrip's user booking data, the current number of bookings for the 2024 New Year's Day train tickets increased 194% year-on-year. High-speed trains to Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Jinan, Zhengzhou, and Hangzhou are the most popular, and Beijing, Harbin, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Jinan, and Changchun are the most popular departure cities for high-speed trains on the upcoming New Year's Day holiday.

Though the holiday lasts only three days, young people are enormously enthusiastic about traveling. The report shows that the number of post-00s, post-90s, and post-80s tourists account for 33%, 33%, and 23% respectively. The post-00s generation is rising as a “special tourism force”, and the number of post-00s tourists for the upcoming New Year's Day holiday increased by 2.5 times compared with last year.

So far, there are still many special tickets for the New Year's Day holiday available. The report shows that as of December 15, the volume of outbound travel bookings for the New Year's Day holiday on the Ctrip platform increased nearly five times year-on-year. Japan, China's Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, China's Macau, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom are among the top 10 most popular destinations for outbound tourism. Outbound tourists are mainly born in the 1990s, 1980s and 1970s, accounting for 39%, 30%, and 14%, respectively.

Skiing overseas on the 2024 New Year's Day is also popular with travelers. Since December, outbound ski product orders have increased 460% month-on-month. The volume of bookings for group skiing tours during New Year's Day and the Spring Festival increased by six times and 16 times compared with last year. Popular destinations for outbound skiing include Japan, South Korea, Finland, and Russia. Additionally, seeing the aurora in the Arctic Circle has also become a fashionable activity on New Year’s Eve. The report shows that travel bookings to Finland and Sweden to see the aurora borealis on New Year's Day increased by 73% and 10% compared with the previous month.

The development of the inbound tourism industry is also in full swing. Recently, China has decided to pilot a one-sided visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. After the introduction of the policy, the number of searches for entry into the country instantly increased. As the New Year's Day holiday and the Christmas holiday are close, many foreign tourists plan to visit their relatives or travel to China.
