CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- As an important industrial city in modern China, Chongqing has abundant industrial resources. Recently, the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources and Chongqing Municipal Geographic Information and Remote Sensing Application Center have jointly published the Map of Chongqing’s Industrial Heritage Sites, which will give us a deeper insight into the history of Chongqing’s industrial development.

The Map of Chongqing’s Industrial Heritage Sites includes 19 industrial heritage sites of Chongqing that have been listed in the National Industrial Heritage Sites and the Chongqing Industrial Heritage Sites – The 816 Project of Nuclear Industry, the largest known artificial cavern in the world; Shizitan Hydropower Station, China's first self-designed and constructed basin-wide cascade development project; and Daqiangba Water Plant, the first water plant in western China, to name a few.

These factories and facilities have become precious industrial heritage in China, which bear the signs of national industry and witness and history of industrial development in Chongqing. Let’s have a look at some of the heritage sites.

816 Project of the Nuclear Industry

The 816 Project of Nuclear Industry is located in Baitao Sub-district, Fuling District, on the east bank of Wujiang River and in the hinterland of Mount Jinzishan. Code-named 816, it is the world's largest known man-made cave. It was suspended in 1984 due to the adjustment of national strategy and then was closed for protection. The project was declassified by the state in April 2002 and partially opened to tourists as a tourist attraction in 2010. The 816 Project is the only declassified nuclear reactor in China, as well as an important witness to the history of Two Bombs and One Satellite and the Third-Front Movement.

Shizitan Cascade Hydropower Station Hub

Built in 1954 and completed in 1957 in Changshou District, Shizitan Cascade Hydropower Station Hub is the largest engineering construction project in the first batch of hydropower stations in China's first Five-Year plan, and also the first self-designed and constructed basin-wide cascade development project. Known as the cradle of hydropower experts in People's Republic of China, the project has supplied thousands of hydropower construction talents, making great contributions to hydropower engineering construction and hydropower personnel training in China.

Daqiangba Water Plant of Chongqing Water Company

Built in 1929, the Daqiangba Water Plant of Chongqing Water Company started operation in January 1932 in Yuzhong District. As the first water plant in Chongqing and even in western China, Daqiangba Water Plant helped Chongqing people relieve themselves from hard days when they needed to carry water by themselves. It is a witness to the development of modern public utilities in Chongqing, which has special significance to the modern industrial development in Chongqing.
