Recently, in the Chongqing Blue Sky Rescue Team, which participated in the rescue of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Jishishan, the rescue dog "Lightning" has been favored by many netizens for its cute appearance and bright mind. When it was stabbed by glass at the corner of its mouth while performing tasks, it caused great distress among netizens. This also brings rescue dogs into the public eye.

Lightning, who is 8 years old, joined the Blue Sky Rescue Team in 2017 after returning from Germany where it was trained. Over the past six years of service, it has participated in multiple major disaster rescues both at home and abroad, making numerous contributions to saving lives.

"Lightning" has many “fellows”. At the police dog squad of Mobile Detachment of Chongqing Armed Police Corps, more than ten police dogs have participated in multiple search and rescue missions such as earthquake relief and flood-fighting and emergency rescues. They also play an important role in tasks such as riot prevention, explosive search and hostage rescue.

How to discover signs of life in the ruins and find the trapped? In addition to “innate abilities” such as keen sense of smell and hearing, it is also essential to form a conditioned reflex to help them quickly and accurately locate search and rescue targets at the scene, which is inseparable from scientific and rigorous training in daily life.

5

Look, this police dog successfully discovered the "trapped" in a stack of "search and rescue boxes" simulated as ruins, then it sent out signals through barking and other means. Every successful search and rescue means a "rebirth" for the trapped.

The trainer say that police dog training should be conducted in a scientific and rigorous way, and must follow the principle of "starting from the simple to the complex, adopting different training methods for different dogs, and combining the difficult with the easy". It requires patience and urgency. Every time a dog do a good job in the training, the trainer will take out a small toy or food to reward the police dog.

Searching for explosives is also an important task for police dogs. After special training, they can eliminate interference and search for the one with explosives from a group of suitcases. After discovering an explosive, the police dog will give a signal by lying down and waiting. Opening the case, as expected, items containing gunpowder components come into view.

8

During the riot prevention task, police dogs are also brave warriors. Facing the “gangsters” holding weapons, as long as their owners give a command, they will rush forward without hesitation, bringing us a full sense of security in our lives.

What do police dogs eat? Every day, soldiers carefully prepare delicious nutritious meals for them. Police dogs usually have two meals a day. The first meal is usually around 10:30 am after the routine training every morning; the second meal is usually after 6:30 pm after the afternoon training.

10

Every police dog has its own independent "dormitory" with a "doorplate" at the door, marked with its name, breed, age, trainer, characteristics and other information. These kennels are regularly disinfected to ensure the safety of police dogs.

Armed police soldiers and police dogs get along together morning and night and fight side by side, establishing a deep friendship. The service life of police dogs is generally 7 years, and scenes of retired veterans and retired police dogs depart are tear-jerking every year. Retired police dogs can be adopted by social members or stay behind at police dog bases for retirement after approval. (Translated by Hu Chuanmin, Fathom Language Limited)
