CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The first of a series of press conferences titled "Opportunities in Chongqing" was held on January 18, 2024, to promote cooperation between the Chongqing government and social capital.

Highways have always been the focus of investment and development in transportation. All highways in Chongqing adopt the commercial operating mode and attract social capital through cooperation between the government and social capital, said Zhu Wen, Chief Engineer of Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Transportation.

In June 2023, the Chongqing government approved the implementation of the Chongqing Highway Network Plan (2023-2035). This Plan adds and adjusts 28 projects to strengthen national channels, increase connections between Chengdu and Chongqing, and improve the intra-city highway network", increasing the total length of Chongqing’s operating highways by 1,300 kilometers and forming a highway network consisting of “four ring roads, 22 rays, and 60 interconnected roads”. It is planned that the total length of Chongqing’s operating highways will reach 6,900 kilometers in 2035 and 8,500 kilometers in 2050. So far, the total length of Chongqing’s operating highways has reached 4,142 kilometers. With 30 inter-provincial channels and three ring roads in the downtown area, towns in the Three Gorges Reservoir area in Northeast Chongqing and those in the Wuling Mountain area in Southeast Chongqing, as well as Chongqing and the surrounding five provinces are connected by highways. Chongqing ranks first in western China with a road density exceeding 5.03 km/hundred square kilometers. There are 22 projects, covering a length of 1,222 kilometers, under construction in Chongqing. Within the medium and long-term planning, there are new construction projects of about 3,100 kilometers and road widening projects of about 1,700 kilometers to be implemented, and the project reserves are relatively sufficient.

According to the new version of the National Highway Network Plan issued and implemented by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transportation in July 2022, there are 18 national highways planned in Chongqing, with a planned mileage of about 3,872 kilometers. Compared with the Plan 2013, Chongqing has added three new national highways, which cover a length of about 698 kilometers.
