CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The 13th Chinese medical team for Papua New Guinea (PNG) completed the first case of hemodialysis treatment in PNG on January 30 and qualified Port Moresby General Hospital in PNG for the operation of hemodialysis treatment.

"I've really never felt so relieved as I do now!" The patient, Ms. Shiela, has been living in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, for a long time and was diagnosed with uremia one year ago.

Port Moresby General Hospital is the only public hospital in Port Moresby, but it was unable to provide hemodialysis treatment due to a lack of equipment and technology. Therefore, Ms. Shiela had no choice but to receive expensive and less effective dialysis treatment in a private hospital with very limited healthcare systems, which made her condition even worse.

Not long ago, Ms. Shiela was admitted to the Nephrology Department of Port Moresby General Hospital for treatment as she had increased polyarticular pain and was unable to walk due to uremia. Since she had not received dialysis for two weeks, she was admitted to the hospital with significant edema, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Fortunately, Dr. Wen Yan, Deputy Chief Nephrologist and member of the 13th Chinese medical team to assist PNG started to actively promote the construction of hemodialysis treatment rooms in Port Moresby General Hospital after she arrived at the hospital three months ago. At the beginning of this year, the newly built hemodialysis treatment room of Port Moresby General Hospital was equipped with dialysis machines and trained medical staff to carry out dialysis treatment.

Dr. Wen decided to treat Ms. Shiela with hemodialysis after a thorough assessment.

On the morning of January 22, Dr. Wen successfully completed the four-hour hemodialysis treatment for Ms. Shiela in Port Moresby General Hospital, which shows that Port Moresby General Hospital has been well equipped to carry out hemodialysis treatment. It is a great technological advancement for the Nephrology Department, Port Moresby General Hospital, and even the entire public healthcare system in PNG.

The individualized and comprehensive treatment plan formulated by Dr. Wen quickly relieved the patient's symptoms, such as edema, heart fatigue, and shortness of breath. In addition, Ms Shiela's joint pain, which had clouded her days for nine months, was completely relieved.

The incidence of chronic kidney disease is extremely high in PNG, but hemodialysis treatment cannot be carried out in public hospitals due to the lack of equipment and technology. Therefore, a large number of patients with chronic kidney disease and uremia cannot receive timely and effective treatment and eventually lose their lives.

"In the future, we will continue to provide the medical staff in the dialysis center with theoretical and practical training, and strengthen the popularization of medical knowledge to patients to help the hospital establish a patient follow-up mechanism,” said Dr. Wen. She hopes to bring China's advanced treatment technology and concepts to PNG to benefit local patients. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
