CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Chongqing Medical University held the 15th Qingming Festival Memorial Ceremony to honor body donors and communicate benevolence on April 2, where nearly 4,000 medical students paid silent tribute to body donors (body donors are respectfully called ‘Da Ti Lao Shi’ in Chinese).

Some individuals in the medical university donated their bodies for education and research, making significant contributions to the development of modern medicine. These body donors are respectfully called ‘Da Ti Lao Shi’ by medical teachers and students in China.

A body donor had said he would rather have students make 10,000 surgical errors on him than have them make one on patients, said Wang Kejian, Vice Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Chongqing Medical University. Body donors are of great importance to the training of medical talents, Wang added.

Respect for body donors makes students see not only individual organs but also the lives of people; cultivating respect for body donors can prevent students from disregarding life and make them caring and benevolent people.

“Anatomy is the most basic course for medical students. Body donors are respectable because they realize the final value of their cells, organs, blood vessels, and small nerves when their life ends, which are of great value in medical study and research,” said Wang Kejian. As an anatomy teacher, Wang intends to register to be a body donor.

Chongqing Medical University has persisted in holding a memorial ceremony to honor body donors for 15 consecutive years, which involves 65,000 students. The event aims to remember those body donors who have made great contributions to the development of medicine and strengthen the education of the ideal and conviction that doctors are healers with benevolent hearts.
