CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Many seniors enjoy the outdoors in spring. Ctrip’s data shows that Chongqing has become the most popular destination for elderly tourists.

These days have seen a surge in elderly tourists. According to Ctrip’s data, travelers aged between 45 and 64 maintained a rapid growth and accounted for a large proportion of tourists in the domestic tourism market in 2021; the number of elderly Ctrip users (aged 50 and above) in 2023 increased by 90% compared with the same period in 2019, with a growth rate far exceeding that of users in other age groups.

In March and April this year, Chongqing, Guiyang, and Beijing ranked as the top three destinations for elderly tourists, followed by Shanghai, Lijiang, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Sanya, Xi'an, and Chengdu. From the perspective of consumption preference, Shanghai’s elderly are fond of cruises, Beijing’s elderly prefer self-driving tours, Shenzhen’s elderly are most willing to spend on high-grade hotels, Wuhan’s elderly love to view flowers, and Harbin's elderly like sea views most.

The per capita tourism consumption growth potential of seniors is great. The number of elderly Ctrip users (aged 50 and above) in 2023 increased by 90% compared with the same period in 2019, with a growth rate far exceeding that of users in other age groups. China Tourism Academy predicted that by 2025, the number of healthy younger seniors traveling abroad and spending much on tourism will exceed 100 million, bringing a revenue of more than one trillion yuan to the tourism industry.
