CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- When it comes to Chongqing, you may think of a city of mountains, hot pots, an 8D city, a cyberpunk city, and a capital of bridges. As a well-known bridge city in China, Chongqing is home to more than 20,000 bridges, including 60 bridges above the Yangtze River and 45 bridges above the Jialing River. Each bridge in Chongqing is unique and constitutes part of the stunning cityscape of Chongqing.

Baijusi Yangtze Bridge has been a popular tourist attraction for its unique piers in the shape of water drops and magnificent bridge structures that produce scenes in Interstellar. As the world's largest steel truss cable-stayed bridge used for highway and rail traffic, Baijusi Yangtze Bridge has effectively improved the traveling environments for residents in Banan and Dadukou and promoted cultural exchanges and integration in the Yangtze River Cultural and Artistic Bay Area.

Caiyuanba Yangtze River, connecting Yuzhong District and Nan’an District, looks like a beautiful rainbow at night. It is the first steel-box handle-basket arch bridge for highway and rail traffic in the world. It is specially designed for Chongqing, said Deng Wenzhong, who is the designer of the bridge as well as a world-renowned academician.

Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge is not located in Chaotianmen as its name implies. The bridge has ever held five fascinating world records: it is the bridge with the longest span, the heaviest bearing support, the largest traffic load, the most difficulty with both highway and rail traffic, and the first main pier in the shape of a triumphal arch in the world.

Whenever speaking of bridges, Chinese people may think of poems, as bridges were often mentioned in ancient poetry. Dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge and Qiansimen Jiangling River Bridge, with smooth lines and harp-shaped towers, are fantastic and poetic.

Qiansimen Jialing River Bridge, as a testimony to Chongqing’s efforts in providing tourists with a pleasant tour, is often closed to vehicular traffic to serve as a ‘footbridge’ for visitors. According to the National Tourist Satisfaction Survey 2023, Chongqing has been included in the list of top ten satisfactory tourist cities in China for 2023.

Egongyan Railway Bridge, a self-anchored suspension bridge with the largest span in the world, is jokingly referred to as the couple of Egongyan Bridge. It is built 19 years earlier than Egongyan Bridge. The two bridges, which stand 45 meters apart and are similar in appearance, look like husband and wife.

Nanjimen Railway Bridge, Yangtze River Bridge, the second Yangtze River Bridge, and Caiyuanba Bridge form a stunning picture. The four bridges above the sparkling waters of the Yangtze River, look magnificent against the dramatic sunset.

Built in 1988, Shimen Jialing River Bridge is the first cable-stayed bridge in Asia. It was the largest bridge of its kind in China at that time, which marked that Chongqing’s bridge construction technology had reached the first-class international level. These bridges tell the history and culture of Chongqing as a capital of bridges.

When you are viewing the scenery on Zengjiayan Jialing River Bridge, you are also the scenery in the eyes of passengers on the railway train. The first interchange railway station built on the bridge in China is located on Zengjiayan Jialing River Bridge. The bridge in Chinese red is eye-catching at night.

Caijia Railway Bridge, put into use in 2013, was an urban railway bridge with the largest span in Asia at that time. As the bridge is located in the valley and the climate in Chongqing is humid, Caijia Railway Bridge is often shrouded in mist, presenting a fantastic scene.

Hongyancun Jiangling River Bridge, known as the Eye of Chongqing, is designed with Hongyan Gate as the design theme. The bridge uses a gate-shaped tower, which integrates the bridge with the culture of Chongqing. It is also called the Gate of Chongqing and the Eye of Chongqing because of the O-shaped hollowed-out abutment.

Completed in 1999, Huanghuayuan Jialing River Bridge is the first cross-river bridge built in downtown Chongqing after Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government. Upon completion, it is a bridge with the third largest span and the longest continuous rigid frame in the world. Since then, many urban bridges have been built across China.

Niujiaotuo Jialing River Bridge, the first urban bridge in Chongqing, was completed and opened to traffic in 1966. It is the first large bridge across the river in Chongqing and an important channel connecting Jiangbei District, Yubei District, and Yuzhong District.
