CHONGQING (CQNEW) -- With 4,224 kilometers of operating highways, Chongqing ranks first in China’s western region by the density of the highway network and the rural roads, moving one step closer to a city strong on transportation, according to the 2024 Western China International Traffic Expo starting in the Chongqing International Expo Center.
After the opening ceremony, the participants from Chongqing Expressway, Chongqing City Transportation Development & Investment Group, China 19th Metallurgical Group Corporation, etc. Delivered keynote speeches at the 2nd Forum on Building up Western China’s Transport Strength.
How to advance the digital development of urban public transportation? Zheng Zhiming, a member of the Party committee and the deputy general manager of Chongqing City Transportation Development & Investment Group, shared in his speech the efforts made and experience gained by Chongqing in the digital transformation of public transportation.
Chongqing has started a series of digitalization projects for public transportation, said Zheng Zhiming. For example, with the implementation of the Chongqing Rail Transit (CRT) Communications-based Train Control (CBTC) Systems R&D and Industrialization Project, the CBTC systems have achieved the connectivity of CRT Line 4, Line 5, and Loop Line.
Today, it takes only 59 minutes for passengers to travel by CRT from Tiaodeng, Dadukou to Tangjiatuo, Jiangbei without transferring on the way. The connection of regional railroads and the Jiangtiao Line provides passengers with easier and more time-saving travel.
To offer passengers more comfortable and convenient travel experiences, Chongqing City Transportation Development & Investment Group has launched a demand-responsive bus service to achieve the flexible allocation of transportation capacity based on passengers' departure places and destinations and the real-time dynamic planning of travel routes, and transport passengers along the most reasonable routes to their destination within the prescribed time.
Chongqing Expressway has made efforts in smart transportation. Currently, Chongqing has 4,224 kilometers of highways in operation and 1,116 kilometers of highways under construction, said Wang Zhi, a member of the Party Committee and the deputy general manager of Chongqing Expressway. He added that the total length of Chongqing’s operating highways will reach 8,500 kilometers according to the overall planning of Chongqing for 2035.
With a road density of 5.12 kilometers per 100 square kilometers, Chongqing’s highway network ranks first in western China. It has 32 trans-provincial roads, of which 19 are connected to Sichuan in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle.
Chongqing Expressway has improved the traffic capacity, service capacity, and management and control capabilities of highways through intelligent capacity expansion. For example, the enterprise has constructed a 135-kilometer smart highway between Jieshi to Wulong of the Baotou-Maoming Expressway G65 by building free flow tolling roads, smart tunnels, smart service areas, vehicle-road cooperation systems, and structural monitoring and emergency response devices on a trial basis. The pilot sections of roads have experienced decreases in emergency response time and safety incidents and increases in traffic efficiency and road user satisfaction, and these technologies and measures are being promoted and popularized.
What’s more, Chongqing Expressway is stepping up efforts to promote the development of hydrogen energy infrastructure in the Chengdu-Chongqing region and build hydrogen refueling stations along the Chengdu-Chongqing Highway and the Chongqing-Wanhou Highway so as to develop the Chengdu-Chongqing Hydrogen Corridor.
