CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Recently, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) jointly announced that starting from 2024, the central government will support some cities to implement urban renewal initiatives, with the 15 cities to be potentially supported including Shijiazhuang, Taiyuan, Shenyang, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Fuzhou, Nanchang, Qingdao, Wuhan, Dongguan, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Xi'an.

Shortlisted as one of the pilot cities supported by government funding, Chongqing demonstrates its efforts to promote high-quality urban renewal. In recent years, with a focus on improving the quality and efficiency of the city’s inventory space, Chongqing has endeavored to create a livable, resilient, and intelligent city by transforming the development mode of megacities, constantly improving the urban functions, upgrading the quality of the city, and making the living environment better for residents, according to the Chongqing Municipal Housing and Urban-rural Development Commission. So far, Chongqing has started 288 urban renewal projects, of which 115 are extended projects under construction and 50 have been completed and put into use.

During this process, Chongqing has successively undertaken national urban renewal, complete community construction, and urban health examination pilot missions, and pioneered the experimental exploration of promoting urban renewal through urban health examination and treating complete community construction as the basic unit of urban renewal. Chongqing has not only achieved urban restructuring, functional improvement, and quality enhancement but also provided more residents with spaces for high-quality living.

Data show that since the launch of the pilot program for the renovation of old urban neighborhoods in 2018, Chongqing has renovated 7,148 urban neighborhoods by the end of March, benefiting 1.71 million households.

So far, the urban renewal projects have been carried out for 491 urban neighborhoods, with a coverage rate of 25%. The complete community construction project in Minzhucun, Jiulongpo District has been rated as one of the first typical cases of complete community construction and urban renewal by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development, signifying the initial results achieved by Chongqing in complete community construction.

14 public spaces on the banks of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, such as Shanhu Park and Yabadong Wetland Park, as well as 57 kilometers of riverside shoreline in downtown Chongqing, have been completed and opened. Taking on a better look, the ‘two rivers and four banks’ areas showcase the charm of Chongqing as a city of natural beauty.

In addition, Chongqing has actively promoted the construction of historical and cultural blocks, traditional landscape areas, and old neighborhoods, bringing a new life to the old blocks and factories, and allowing visitors to gain a new travel experience in Chongqing.

As Chongqing accelerates the pace of urban renewal, more areas will get a new look and provide better living environments for residents. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
