CHONGQING (CQNEW) -- The results of the 35th International Biology Olympiad were announced in Astana, Kazakhstan's capital, at 7:00 p.m. local time on July 13.

After three days of intense experimental and theoretical challenges, Shui Guoxuan, a student from Chongqing Bashu Secondary School, stood out from 305 national-level contestants from 81 countries, clinching the gold medal in the International Biology Olympiad.

It is understood that Shui Guoxuan is the second gold medalist from Chongqing in the International Biology Olympiad since the city became a municipality directly under the Central Government in 1999, following Zhang Daijian in 2021.

At this competition, all four Chinese representatives took home gold medals! The Chinese team also secured the top spot in the world with their total score.

"I feel extremely honored and excited," Shui Guoxuan shared. Since childhood, he has been filled with curiosity and reverence for nature, often observing the living things around him and delving into their mysteries. Entering school, he was further captivated by the depth and breadth of biology, which unveiled the wonders and diversity of life and exposed him to the allure and might of science.

Shui Guoxuan said that during his preparation for the competition, his teachers encouraged him to be bold and innovative, guiding him on how to confront challenges and difficulties. "Our school provided us with excellent learning resources and platforms, and the support and assistance from my family allowed me to focus on my studies in biology." Shui Guoxuan stated that this achievement marked a significant milestone in his life, and he intends to continue exploring and serving his motherland in biology.

In the 32nd China High School Biology Competition held last August, Shui Guoxuan achieved an outstanding result, winning a gold medal with a national ranking of 3rd, said Wang Xu, the international gold medal coach for the biology competition at Chongqing Bashu Secondary School. Shui was subsequently selected for the national training team and admitted to Tsinghua University.

Statistics show that in recent years, Chongqing Bashu Secondary School has nurtured numerous outstanding students in biology competitions. Since 2014, two students from the school have been selected for the Chinese national team (including only two members from Chongqing), one has claimed an international gold medal, 27 have been chosen for the national training team, and 41 have won national gold medals.
