CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On August 10, the comedy-action film "Clash", inspired by a true story from Chongqing, had its grand premiere in the city. The event brought together the film’s cast and the real-life Chongqing dock workers' rugby team, whose story inspired the movie, to share their journey and the heartfelt moments behind the scenes.
"Clash" tells the story of Liu Yonggan (played by Li Jiuxiao), a second-generation tofu maker known as the Bolt of Shapingba. Liu gathers a diverse group of friends, including a truck driver portrayed by Wang Qianyuan, to form a grassroots rugby team. Together, they push beyond their limits, chasing the dream of winning the Eternal Bowl championship.
The film beautifully weaves together the aspirations of working-class, middle-aged characters with real-life events, offering viewers a moving portrayal of ordinary people’s resilience and determination.
“Bringing real stories to life”
The film receiving glowing praise from the real-life counterparts of its characters
The rugby team that inspired "Clash" was formed a decade ago. Liu Yuanfeng, the inspiration for Li Jiuxiao’s character, founded the team in 2012 with a passionate vision to unite people through the sport. Wang Qianyuan's character, Li Yanshi, is a blend of two real individuals, Wen Xue and Xie Tongyu, who both joined the team after responding to a recruitment notice.
Zeng Xi’s character, "Fat Baby," is based on a team member who played the role of the big brother, fostering communication and unity among the players. Ma Nong, portrayed by Li Xueqin, is inspired by Hu Wenting, the team’s organizer who handled logistics, scheduling, and player support while working as a product manager.
These five real-life inspirations attended the premiere in Chongqing, bringing with them helmets used by their teammates and thank-you letters from previous seasons. "These items represent the deep bond we share. Watching the film felt like reliving those moments of camaraderie and hard work," said Hu Wenting.
The film's commitment to authenticity shines through in its use of Chongqing locations and dialect, capturing the true spirit of the city. "Clash" is set for nationwide release on August 23. Be sure to catch it!
