CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On September 3, the 75th Executive Council of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage was held in Sydney, Australia. During the meeting, the 2024 (11th batch) List of World Heritage Irrigation Structures was announced. The Jufeng Weir in Xiushan successfully passed the expert panel's review and Q&A session, becoming Chongqing's first world-class heritage irrigation structure.

Located on the banks of the Pingjiang River, the Jufeng Weir was built as needed in the 32nd year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1767) of the Qing Dynasty, following the policy of "bureaucratization of native officers". It has been providing irrigation for nearly 260 years. This centuries-old weir integrates functions such as flood control, irrigation, and desilting, with a reasonable layout and scientific structure, making it a model for water diversion and irrigation hubs in hilly and mountainous regions.

"The Jufeng Weir continues to play a crucial role in irrigation and flood control, nurturing the beautiful and fertile Longfeng Irrigation Area and offering selfless gifts to its people. Notably, during the severe drought of 2022, it made a significant contribution to stabilizing and increasing grain production, ensuring the county's food security," said Yao Yongjun, a member of the Leading Party Group of the County Water Conservancy Bureau.

The water conservancy department stated that it took 4 years for the Jufeng Weir to apply for being inscribed a World Heritage Irrigation Structure, relying on efforts from all sides. Chongqing actively supported the application with policies, funding, and projects, while studying, exploring and promoting the historical and cultural value of the Jufeng Weir. Xiushan has established a special team to focus on the restoration and protection of the ancient weir and diligently promoted all aspects of the heritage application.

"Jufeng Weir represents a significant breakthrough in the protection of water conservancy heritage structures in Xiushan County and Chongqing Municipality, filling a gap in Chongqing's world water conservancy heritage structures. It is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of Chongqing's water conservancy, particularly in protecting water conservancy heritage structures and creating a new cultural landmark with Chongqing's unique characteristics," said Yao Yongjun.
